FAQs

  • Rowan is a wellbeing app that provides deeply personalised and empathetic support through AI-powered conversations. Chat to Rowan about whatever challenges you are facing and it will support you, drawing on proven therapeutic techniques.

  • Rowan is currently for adults who would like to try talking about their thoughts and feelings, and practise ways of exploring and managing them. They may be experiencing stress, worry, or relationship challenges. Rowan uses exercises inspired by proven techniques to support individuals.

  • Rowan is currently for anyone over the age of 18. We are looking to extend this and hope to make it available to adolescents (age 13-18) soon.

  • Rowan meets you where you are with personalised support. It combines the latest advancements in AI technology with evidence-based psychological support. Its main focus is to help you work through difficult thoughts and feelings through talking, much in the same way as you would with a therapist or counsellor. While many of the therapeutic exercises have a focus on wellbeing, such as mindfulness, improving sleep and breathwork, this is woven into conversations and is dependent on what you need in that moment.

Unlike ChatGPT, which provides generalised responses, Rowan uses fine-tuned AI that is specifically inspired by evidence based strategies.

  • Rowan records how you are feeling about life over time. This reflection is for your personal insight and is not a clinical assessment.

  • We know how important it is for anyone working in the mental health sector to have robust safety practices in place. We work hard at this and we take our responsibility to you seriously. We have a dedicated page on safety and our safeguarding policy is here.

  • We have advanced protocols in place to ensure your data and the conversations you have with our apps are kept secure. Read about this here and our privacy policy is here.

  • Rowan has been carefully trained to identify when someone is at risk of harming themselves or others. If that happens, Rowan will signpost to the emergency services, NHS services or other emotional and mental health support.

  • Not only do many mental health services have long wait lists, but many also have a very low success rate. Rowan is a wellbeing app, but has been developed under the guidance of clinical psychologists using the latest large-scale science.

  • The ethics of using AI to support wellbeing is continually evolving and we are working hard to stay at the forefront of thinking on this and are embedding ethical practices into all our apps. Visit our dedicated page on this subject.

  • Rowan can help with emotional support following the diagnosis of a mental health condition. It can also be helpful for people who are in therapy but we advise people to talk to their therapist about using Rowan.

  • Currently, Rowan offers over 100 exercises proven to work in an analysis of over 55,000 scientific papers This is because there is large scale evidence to show that they work for a lot of people. Read more about this in our blog.

  • We are in the relatively early stages of developing Rowan and therefore don’t currently have any published scientific papers at this stage. However, internal data is looking promising and  we do know that many people within the Rowan community are finding it valuable and it is helping with their wellbeing. Read more here.
